Composition in Two Genres

Food Waste

When you toss food in trash cans,

Do you even feel any guilt?

Especially when you can lend a hand.

Some people’s stomachs are full to the hilt,

While some can’t afford to eat just enough.

You’re able to help.

But for them, it’s pretty tough.

With landfills piling up and greenhouse gas,

The Earth gets a little worse,

But you can help to make this pass.

We can end this curse.

So stop wasting food.

So we won’t be screwed.

Rhetorical Situation: Many people do not realize how impactful throwing away one piece of food really is as it a small, but it is still a contribution towards the negative environmental effects of food waste. Many also do not see this as a social issue and tend to be ignorant with their actions.

Genre: I wrote a poem that describes the process of one wasting food when disposing away uneaten food and then comparing that type of person to those who can’t afford to get rid of any food at all. With that waste of food, it’s both detrimental to the Earth and makes people who waste food seem ungrateful for what they have. I thought a poem with rhymes also gave a playful atmosphere to a serious conflict and would make the reader more curious about the words being read.

Audience: My audience is more towards those who dispose away uneaten food and for them to wonder and reflect on what they are doing. Their actions might seem unphasable for them, but for those who are food insecure have a different experience. They are also help environmentally damage their own home and should think twice about that

Purpose: I want the readers to wonder what type of person they are when it comes to food waste and see what they can do to improve their actions or continue to help preserve the Earth.

Stance: Playful, but still being aggressive and critical(irony).

Rhetorical Situation: It’s obvious that most supermarket shoppers pick only the best looking produce to eat, those without bruises and are bright in color, but by doing this, most of the leftover produce just goes to waste.

Genre: I created a poster showing two images of the same fruits, but the one on the left looks darker with more bruises than the one on the right. I had photoshopped the left image to become the right so that it would have less blemishes and look brighter and more saturated.

Audience: The targeted audience are those that shop for produce daily. They will choose the physically appealing fruits and vegetables over the ones that don’t look as good, but I want the audience to realize that it is fine to buy the ones that they considered “ugly” as well.

Purpose: I want the audience to realize that both the good looking and not so good looking ones are the same on the inside as they are still the same produce. Both can be as delicious as the other and by not being so picky when buying produce can help reduce food waste in supermarkets.

Stance: Direct and informative
